Viruses

Viruses are perfect parasites. Outside a living cell, a virus is a dormant particle, not able to reproduce itself. Only when it enters a host cell, it goes into action by hijacking the cell’s own cellular process. DNA viruses (like the poxvirus) can replicate in the host cell. RNA viruses (including the coronavirus COVID-19)  need to infect cells by injecting RNA into the cytoplasm of the host cell and then use its transcription enzyme (reverse transcriptase) to create DNA from RNA templates. From then on, the infected cell will produce virally encoded protein that will replicate the virus’ genetic material.

Combating viruses to eradicate rabies, chickenpox, smallpox or yellow fever has long been a major struggle for humanity. It is said that 1,000 years ago, the Chinese had discovered they could improve immunity by taking some material from the blister of somebody sick with smallpox and scratching with it the arm of a healthy person.

Thanks to various methods of hygiene and vaccination, these diseases have been contained, although there are still some residual outbreaks in some countries. But other viruses, especially Ebola, the avian flu, and AIDS (HIV virus), have attracted considerable attention in the past decade. And then came COVID-19.

A virus’ genome is a nucleic acid (either DNA or RNA). Viruses can only multiply (by replicating their genome) when they infect a cell and use that cell’s enzymes to complete the replication process. As mutations in human viruses occur constantly, it is very difficult to find active vaccines, which is why a treatment for Ebola is yet to be found, and flu vaccines are not always efficient. As per AIDS, researchers are now counting on products such as antiretroviral therapies.

Scientific Breakthrough:A plant extract with antiviral activity

As a young researcher, Dr. Mirko Beljanski spent several years working with Severo Ochoa, the 1959 Nobel Prize winner. Severo Ochoa was recognized for his discovery of an enzyme in bacteria called polynucleotide phosphorylase. This enabled him to synthesize ribonucleic acid (RNA).

This work led Dr. Beljanski to further study, and eventually re-create the process whereby the hereditary information contained in genes is translated (1).

In the 1980’s, Mirko Beljanski discovered a plant extract with antiviral effect: Pao Pereira. It’s a tree that grows in the Amazon rainforest. The bark is harvested, extracted, and a preparation is made from this extracted material that can be taken orally by humans, and has been shown to have antiviral effect as well as is better known for anti-cancer effect. Note that the active compound in the extract is a molecule known as Flavopereirine. This harvesting of the bark is not killing the tree, the bark can regrow, so the life of the tree is sustained.

Mirko Beljanski’s research has focused on the antiviral effective power of the extract of Pao Pereira against RNA viruses.

In the case of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), laboratory experiments have demonstrated activity of the Pao pereira extract against these viruses, including Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV), which is a plant virus. And these experiments are very clear cut. If you cover the leaf with a virus and then treat half with the Pao pereira extract and leave the other half untreated, the untreated part develops these blemishes that are the sign of TMV. The other side that is treated with the Pao pereira is protected and is still a green leaf.

Most importantly, a study about HIV was conducted in a human critical clinical trial. A publication led to this successful study.

The individuals in this trial were HIV positive, so they had been infected with HIV, but they did not have full blown AIDS. In the course of a 12-month study, none of them progressed to full blown AIDS or succumbed to secondary infections. There were some endpoints of real significance here. The CD4 cells count, which gives you an indication of the health of your immune system, came back up on the influence of Pao pereira, same for the total lymphocyte counts. There were several other positive developments, again, without negative side effects.

Over the course of a year, the safety of the Pao pereira (Pau pereira) extract has been established. There are now recent testimonials indicating activity of the Pao pereira (Pau pereira) extract against COVID-19 infections. We have to keep in mind that COVID-19 is an RNA virus. And we have first seen interesting reports from 2 doctors that have described successful treatments of their COVID-19 patients with the Pao pereira (Pau pereira) extract, and also several individuals have come forward and provided a report of effective use. Two factors helped make these testimonials credible: rapid resolution of all the symptoms and success with tell-tale symptoms of COVID-19 infections, such as loss of smell or taste. These anecdotes are provocative but are not proof of antiviral action. And our first step is to get more data from these types of anecdotal but personal testimonials. We are attempting to gather more detailed information on the use of the Pao pereira (Pau pereira) extract in COVID-19 cases. And depending on what we find out, we can then set up a more formal study to look at this effect and make it a scientific study that is convincing.

Pathogens range from viruses to parasitic worms and sometimes they change themselves (mutate) to keep infecting and destroying their hosts despite treatments. When the time comes and your body encounters a pathogen, whichever pathogen it is, we want to keep it outside. Our skin is our first line of defense. Hence the recommendation of washing our hands. Then comes the other physical barriers – stomach acids, mucus, tears – that will help us destroy or expel the pathogen.

But sometimes, the invader makes its way within. Your immune system then is called to the rescue. Its job is to protect you against harmful pathogens (like bacteria and viruses), and limit damage from noninfectious agents (like sunburn or cancer). But what if you don’t have a strong immune system? This is why all whose immune systems are weakened, including adults and children with serious chronic health conditions (including cancer) are at greater risk of developing serious complications from COVID-19.

The immune system is made of a variety of cells and cell signals, working together to prevent and cure infections. But all of them derive from stem cells in the bone marrow.

Individuals undergoing chemotherapy often see their white blood cells damaged by the treatment, leading to the weakening of their immune systems. As Dr. Mirko Beljanski was looking into helping individuals whose white blood cells are damaged by chemotherapy, he created small RNA fragments able to prime the replication of DNA in bone marrow stem cells. The bone marrow, in turn, creates all lines of white blood cells that soldier our immune system. In a clinical trial at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) where the studied population were cancer patients suffering from a very weakened immune system, these RNA fragments have proved to be a breakthrough: no toxicity, no side effects, and a better immune system. What it says about AIDS

Late that same evening, I asked my mother how the same product could be effective against viruses as well as so many different kinds of cancers.

“Your father worked a lot on enzymes,” she began. “Before his discovery that reverse transcriptase was present in bacteria, it was only known to be in viruses. His discovery of reverse transcriptase in bacteria was huge because bacteria are everywhere. The phenomenon that scientists had once thought to be contained to the viral world, was in fact, everywhere. Your father could have stopped his investigation there. But then AIDS appeared. In the beginning, nobody knew anything about it, and it was kind of a new plague. From 1981 through 1987, new HIV/AIDS cases and fatalities doubled roughly every year. The year 1987 saw forty-thousand deaths and nearly fifty-thousand new cases. Scientists were not sure about the way this deadly virus was transmitted, but that did not prevent them from giving all sorts of opinions and advice.

In the meantime, both the Pasteur Institute in France and Abbott Laboratories in the United States were racing each other to find a test to check if transfused blood was clear of the virus. Abott came first, and revealed that the virus could be destroyed by heating up the blood before transfusion. In France, the Pasteur Institute used all its political might to delay the approval of the American test, hoping to come up with their own in the interim. Knowingly, the heating process was not implemented, resulting in thousands of additional people contaminated with AIDS because of bad blood transfusions. It was a huge scandal. At the time, there was no treatment available and an AIDS diagnosis was equivalent to a death sentence.
