Powerful points shared bySylvie Beljanski and Thomas Sandberg, CSAN, CCNC, AADP:

  • Like Owner, Like Pet
    • Cats and dogs share about 85% of the same DNA as humans.
    • Because we have lived together for more than 10,000 years, we have become susceptible to some of the same diseases.
    • Disease develops over long periods of time and the same conditions that create cancer in humans also applies to our pets.
    • 6 million dogs and nearly 6 million cats will be diagnosed with cancer this year.
  • Environmental Factors Harming Pets
    • Air pollution from smokers, cars, trucks, coal, power plants, construction etc. all lead to an increased risk of disease.
    • Most conventional pesticides are carcinogens.
    • A recent study found lawn herbicides and pesticides was associated with a 70% increased risk of canine malignant lymphoma.
  • The Importance of Nutrition
    • Like humans, obesity in pets is a risk factor for cancer.
    • Low quality fillers makeup the bulk of the food meaning our pets don’t get the nutrition they need, which further contributes to cancer. They can’t heal as long as they stay in an inappropriate diet.
    • Being carnivores, dogs and cats both have a short intestine length and are predisposed to do best on diets composed of quickly digestible food such as protein.
    • In their natural state, cats and dogs eat only raw meat. In kibbles and other pet food cereals, not only is the food cooked, but it is 60% vegetable products.
    • Treats are reported as the worst nutrition offenders.
  • Tests and Treatments are Similar for Humans and Pets
    • Conventional methods include chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Cats tend to tolerate chemotherapy even better than dogs, and both tend to handle chemotherapy better than people.
    • There are alternative treatments that include diet modifications, acupuncture and nutritional supplements.
