In this recent study, rats who benefited from nutritional supplementation in form of a green tea extract rich in EGCG, a green tea catechin is one such phytochemical which possesses hypoglycemic and antifibrotic activity, experienced an  improvement of their renal functions.  In accordance with this study, although a number of potential treatment strategies exist for diabetic nephropathy, considering the ease of use and bioavailability, EGCG might be regarded as a prospective therapeutic candidate in modulating diabetic nephropathy, thus being a promising treatment. Prevention  involves maintaining a healthy diet, regular physical exercise, a normal body weight, and avoiding use of tobacco.

Drinking organic green tea on a regular basis can also be a good idea. Green tea species are not all equal, and some may be more beneficial than others.
